Three-fourths of the original hieroglyphics inscription appears to have survived, and counterclockwise reads: Joseph said it represents God sitting upon his throne. Egyptologists say that this is the god “Min. His erect penis is clearly shown. It’s interesting to note that in some earlier editions of the BOA the church erased the penis so it wouldn’t look pornographic. It has since been restored in our current versions.
But isn’t it somewhat disturbing that Joseph would say that this pagan god with his exposed penis is our Heavenly Father? Note, even LDS apologists admit that this figure, with the erect penis, is the god Min.

The process of constructing the stemma is called recension, or the Latin recensio. If one reading occurs more often than another at the same level of the tree, then the dominant reading is selected.

Early Items From H. Howe’s Historical Collections of Ohio Art. By a Citizen of the United States. The earth is nearly eight thousand miles in diameter, and the deepest excavations that have been made in it by human art, do not extend to half a mile below its surface. We are, therefore, utterly ignorant of the nature and composition of the interior of this immense mass, and must, perhaps, for ever remain so.
The subject is of too much interest, however, not to have excited the particular attention of philosophers, and, in the absence of facts, many of them have not hesitated to resort to speculation and conjecture. Burnet, the earliest cosmogonist whose system is worthy of norice, supposed that the earth was originally a fluid, chaotic mass, composed of various substances differing in form and density.
In the course of time, the heaviest portions subsided, and formed about the centre a dense and solid nucleus. The waters took their station around this body; on their surface floated an ocean of oil and unctuous matters; and the whole was surrounded by the air and other ethereal fluids. This atmosphere was at first full of impurities, being charged with particles of the earth with which it had been previously blended.
By degrees, however, it purified itself, by depositing these particles upon the stratum of oil; and there was formed a thick and solid crust of mould, which was the firts habitable part of the globe. After many centuries, this crust, having been gradually dried by the heat of the sun, cracked and split asunder, so as to fall into the abyss of waters beneath it; and this great event was the universal deluge.
Our present earth is composed of the remains of the first; our continents and islands being portions of the primordial crust, from which the waters have retired.

LDS atmosphere[ edit ] Brigham Young University’s stated purpose is to “assist individuals in their quest for perfection and eternal life “. This tradition began during the time when Brigham Young was actively involved with the University. This phrase is used in reference to the school’s perceived mission as an “ambassador” to the world for the LDS Church and thus, for Jesus Christ.
Leaders encourage students and faculty to help fulfill the goal by following the teachings of their religion, adhering to the school’s honor code, and serving others with the knowledge they gain while attending. Bednar offered the commencement address BYU mandates that its students be religiously active. The affidavit must be signed by LDS church leaders and be resubmitted annually.
Students have a degree of flexibility with these religious courses, although they must take at least two courses covering the Book of Mormon , one covering the Doctrine and Covenants , and one covering the New Testament.

A Journal of Mormon Scripture 28 In recent years the Book of Mormon has been compared to pseudo-biblical texts like Gilbert J. Some have found strong linguistic correspondence and declared that there is an authorial relationship. In order to determine whether it is a good match with the form and structure of pseudo-biblical writings, I investigate nearly 10 kinds of syntax and morphosyntax that occur in the Book of Mormon and the King James Bible, comparing their usage with each other and with that of four pseudo-biblical texts.
Findings are summarized toward the end of the article, along with some observations on biblical hypercorrection and alternative LDS views on Book of Mormon language. This study addresses the degree to which Book of Mormon language differs from that of pseudo-biblical writings of the late s and early s, investigating whether there are small or large differences in form and structure.
Textual criticism is a branch of textual scholarship, philology, and literary criticism that is concerned with the identification of textual variants in either manuscripts or printed books. Scribes can make alterations when copying manuscripts by hand. Given a manuscript copy, several or many copies, but not the original document, the textual critic might seek to reconstruct the original text.
A Journal of Mormon Scripture 25 Review of Brian D. Some thirty-plus years ago, toward the beginning of my career as professor of linguistics at BYU, a young Brian Stubbs knocked at my office door to make what was, in my opinion, a wild claim — that he had found a significant number of cognates1 that would link a New World language family Uto-Aztecan to an Old World language family pre-exilic Hebrew2 and later others.
The idea of any genetic relationship between Near Eastern languages and Uto-Aztecan seemed out of the question. Nonetheless I listened, a bit intrigued with the data he showed me. A lifetime later, Brian has established himself as one of the leading Uto-Aztecan comparatists, owing to the many papers he has read at conferences and his many publications in journals the likes of International Journal of American Linguistics — but most especially to his massive page book, Uto-Aztecan: Stubbs numbers the sets 1— , but in reality there are many more than 2, sets because many subsets are given with numbers like 7a, 7b, 7c, for vocabulary that may or may not be groupable into a single more inclusive set.
Each set is discussed in some detail and the serious comparativist will delight in the discussions. However, his Semitic coursework brought him to courses in linguistics, which captivated him. It was the fortuitous connection of his expertise in UA with Semitic, both firmly ensconced in his head, which led him to see ever more correlations between the two. As he began his scholastic career, his presentations and publications emphasized UA, with little mention of the New-Old World connections.
More recently, however, he began to include his Near Eastern insights, but in he published his crowning work, Exploring the Explanatory Power of Semitic and Egyptian in Uto-Aztecan. It is an impressive follow-up to his earlier UA work. His publication deserves the same assessment of the data that has been given to his earlier publication — even in the face of his [Page ]unusual claim.
